Married At First Sight’s Ryan Gallagher has discussed his split from Charlotte Crosby for the first time, following fake rumours the whole thing was a ‘showmance’ after it was revealed they share the same Australian manager.
During an interview on Australian Race winners Tim & Rod’s podcast The Real House Husbands, the comedian explained how the pair actually struck up a connection months before filming, but their manager did everything he could to keep them apart as he knew what was coming.
…until one big screw up happened before filming, and they found out they were both doing the show.
Whoops.
Ryan on his connection with Charlotte before meeting on IAC:
‘We were talking for a while before we went in there, we were talking for about three or four months – but I didn’t know she was going into the jungle until the night before. We fucked it up, we have the same manager and he didn’t tell either of us who was going in – but we were talking over Instagram, and Charlotte usually took like five or ten hours to write back because of the time difference, but she was writing back straight away. I was like, “I’ve got a secret I’m in South Africa” – and she went, “I am too.” I was like, “You’re kidding me! No way”.’
Ryan reveals how Charlotte was meant to come to Australia to meet him months before IAC:
‘We went into [the jungle] around December 28 I think, and in October Charlotte was planning on flying over [to Australia] to see me. But [our shared manager] was like, “No! This isn’t a good idea, you’ve got stuff on, maybe after Christmas you could look into it”. So she was meant to come over, but we would have told each other. I think by October we both knew we were going in [to the jungle]. There was a bit of flirting going on.’
Ryan on how he first got chatting with Charlotte:
‘She messaged Shane (their manager) and said, “Who’s that?” after seeing one of my photos.’
Ryan on their split just weeks after leaving the jungle:
‘We had a lot of fun, and I was pretty sad when we first broke up but I got over it in the end. She’s not someone I would usually go for – I don’t like plastic surgery or Botox or that stuff, I try and stay clear of it. Being a country person, I thought [people like that] were like Desperate Housewives with money and a bit bitchy – but that’s not the case at all … I never watched [our season back] because I think it would upset me, I genuinely was a bit cut.’
Ryan on where things stand between them now:
‘I think we could be friends, definitely. I don’t hate the girl, I don’t have anything nasty to say, she was very honest. The one thing I liked about her was she is genuine, you don’t get that often. She has nothing to hide. She has a really big heart and that’s something I don’t want to lose as a friend.’
Last year, Charlotte opened up about their split to 10daily, claiming it was a ‘mutual decision’ but ultimately led by her, saying:
‘When me and Ryan came out of the jungle I made no secret that I had been in a very long relationship and I wasn’t ready to jump into another one. I still wasn’t looking for something serious, he’s at a stage in his life where he is — so we came to a mutual decision that we’d just cool it off. I just need to have that time on my own where I’m not worried about anyone else. I want to be really selfish for one year.’
